Every employee is involved in business processes to create products or services. The causes of decreasing customer satisfaction and increasing quality costs are often unknown, so derived solutions often only address symptoms. Six Sigma methods and tools enable a systematic solution of typical process problems and lead to sustainable operational excellence.

Go from Yellow to Green Belt in this project-based Lean Six Sigma course. With the TUM Yellow Belt, you have mastered the body of knowledge of our Green Belt (according to the American Society for Quality standards). Our Green Belt certification requires the implementation of a Six Sigma project (as recommended by the International Society of Six Sigma Professionals), just as the driving experience is necessary to obtain a driver’s license.

To earn the TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification, you will implement a predefined standard project on environmental littering. The goal: “Improve the cleanliness of areas around selected places in your hometown and control the sustainability of your measures.” This project topic supports the United Nations Sustainability Goal #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. To reach this goal you will drive along the DMAIC, accompanied by a Master Black Belt as co-pilot. The route is determined by our navigation software (sigma guide). We will stop at every important sigma tool, which you will then apply in practice and document in a project storybook. This storybook will demonstrate the operational excellence of and in your work. (Please note: The implementation of company-specific, individually supported business projects for certification are not included in this edX/TUM course)

We will guide you through your improvement project. Each DMAIC phase concludes with a project review by a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. With the feedback on your achieved project results, we keep you on track before you start the next DMAIC phase. You will also participate in weekly live sessions online, where we will discuss the tools and logic of Six Sigma in-depth and answer any questions. The e-book for the course, Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Project, is included in the course price.

Green Belt Certification: Learners will be awarded the TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification after completing this course and all of its requirements, including:

  • Previous acquisition of the TUM Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certificate,
  • Application of the sigma tools (sigma guide),
  • Documentation of the results in a project storybook,
  • Five graded reviews of the project storybook along with the DMAIC phases,
  • Participation in at least 10 open-online-sessions,
  • Delivery of the completed project storybook and the collected data.

Once a year we present the Environment Green Belt Award for the best Lean Six Sigma certification project. In addition to the basic certification criteria - a correctly implemented and documented project - an excellent project is required, with a project sponsor and a strong, sustainable reduction of litter at a local hotspot.

Moritz B., A: “The Lean Six Sigma Yellow & Green Belt courses offered by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are the perfect opportunity to reach high-quality training from a reputable organization - especially in this exceptional time of physical distancing.

_I started with the Yellow Belt Course where I got a lot of high-level theoretical knowledge about Lean as well as Six Sigma. The course is a nice mixture of theoretical input and practical tasks. The self-paced structure of the course enabled me to choose my personal learning speed. Special thanks to Prof. Dr. Holly Claudia Ott for the effort she put in the various lectures in the Yellow Belt course and her very understandable way of explaining difficult topics.

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course builds on the theoretical topics with a practical project. The project is about the littering situation in your hometown – it’s a nice idea to have a positive impact on our planet while doing this certification project. You learn how to apply the learned Six Sigma methods as well as some key elements about project management. If you need help you get really good support in the internal course forum from your peers as well as from the professors. Furthermore, there is a weekly online session in the Green Belt course where you can ask your personal questions as well as learn about best practice examples.

I enjoyed the challenging project and learned a lot about Six Sigma and its implementation. Special thanks to Dr. Reiner Hutwelker for all the effort and passion he puts into the TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program. **I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COURSE! ” _ ** __

Testimonials from our Business-Certification Projects:

Ana F., Norway : “Since I started my Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program through TUM, I went through a process of learning by doing with heavy support of tools and coaching sessions made available by TUM. The program is set up in a logical, methodical, and very well-structured way, but at the same time, it is challenging for me to step up by taking responsibility and leadership over my project. My work is now more visible to management and I am sure to be able to provide them solutions rather than just problems. Continuous learning allows growth and for those interested in developing their knowledge in Six Sigma, this program is simply perfect.”

Brad B., USA : “The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification program through the Technical University of Munich is exciting and challenging at the same time. This program involves a real-life 6 months to a year project that impacts our career and helps us show our leadership that we can enhance our education and apply what we've learned in a project at work. With a focus on Lean Management, our team can work smarter and not harder.”

Christopher L., USA : “ The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program at TUM requires students to actually apply the information learned from the Yellow Belt program to a real work project. Choosing TUM over ASQ certification was a simple decision once I learned that you get to implement your own project at TUM. Running into the real-life problems and scenarios during each phase of the project and having Dr. Reiner Hutwelker available one-on-one to coach you through the tough times has been an extremely valuable experience. The professional experience you will gain coupled with the flexibility of the program on an online platform makes this certification course ideal for all types of students all across the world.”

Helga S., Oman : “I've been on the Lean Six Sigma program since June 2017, first completing the Yellow Belt courses and now working on the Greenbelt. The academic units were challenging and well structured. The practical part so far has offered great support and one on one interaction with Dr. Hutwelker. The coursework slots in perfectly with the implementation of the project in my company so my company is benefitting greatly by having the input of a Master Black belt. I highly recommend this course and particularly Professors Ott and Hutwelker.”

Karim H., China : “I work for a manufacturing SME in the fast-paced and competitive country that is China. As such, access to knowledge and industry best-practice is necessary yet challenging to get. The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification from TUM allows me to apply the knowledge gathered through the Yellow Belt program on a real case and with the continuous support of Dr. Reiner (Master Black Belt). In a nutshell, I am improving my company’s products and services while extending my knowledge and my colleagues. Given the size and resources of my company, this is not something I would have had access to otherwise.”

Are Yellow Belt (YB) certificates from providers other than the Technical University of Munich (TUM) also accepted to apply for the TUM Green Belt (GB) certification?

No. Our TUM YB Body of Knowledge includes theoretical knowledge up to a GB level, and this is necessary for our GB certification.

When and how long does the GB Certification take?

Our online lectures are held on Tuesdays, at 8:00 UTC and 15:00. Both lecture series consist of about 12 lectures and are basically identical. So pick your series. Further information, Zoom links, and links to recorded lectures can be found in the course unit 01/04.

3 courses, approximately 3-5 months on complete all three, self-paced.

How long do I have to wait to start the GB course after completing the TUM YB?

As soon as you have received the edX YB program certificate, you are eligible to start the GB course. You do not need to wait for the additional TUM YB certificate, which is generated three times per year, to start the GB course. After you start the GB course, you will be prompted to enter your YB program record in the first assignment, before you can access the course material.

How long does the GB project take to complete?

Speed is not a criterion of success for us. Typically, GB certification projects should be completed within half a year. The flexibility of this self-paced course allows you to complete your GB project in more or less time, as you need.

May I work on a topic other than the predefined standard project for certification?

No. Individual project topics require individual coaching sessions. We cannot offer these in this context. However, there is the possibility to acquire the GB certificate with an individual business project. For more information, please contact the course instructor.

May I submit an already completed project for certification?

No. You must implement a new project because this is the only way we can ensure that you master the methods and tools.

Will I receive support to introduce my project to the official garbage removal authorities of my city?

An official letter from TUM will be provided upon your admission to the course.

May I use tools other than the sigma guide and the Project Story Book?

No. Our learning material is based on these two tools.

Can I become GB certified even if I cannot complete my project successfully?

No. We want to make sure that all DMAIC phases have been completed, all relevant tools have been applied, and the benefits of the project have been demonstrated.

How long will it take to obtain the TUM GB certification after completion of the course?

Please allow four weeks for review of your Project Story Book and your delivered data file, as well as the preparation of the certificate.

Sponsor for our Standard-Project Litterin: Is this mandatory?

In our company-specific business projects, the support of a corporate sponsor is mandatory so that measures can be implemented in principle. For our predefined standard project on littering, it is recommended to find a sponsor at the local waste management or in the city administration. This would bring the project even closer to reality when it comes to convincing with analyses and fighting for measures. However, we know that this is not always possible. Therefore is not mandatory to find a sponsor for our standard project, but would be appreciated.
