The New Library of Alexandria is dedicated to recapture the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Indeed, it is much more than a library. Beside the Main Library and its affiliated Francophone, Depository and Maps libraries, it has six specialized libraries, a copy of the Internet Archive, four museums, a Planetarium Science Center, an Exploratorium for children, Culturama: a cultural panorama projected over nine screens, (VISTA) Virtual Immersive Science and Technology Applications, 13 Academic Research Centers, 15 permanent exhibitions, four art galleries, a large conference center and, it hosts the secretariat of a number of international institutions.
The Library of Alexandria holds hundreds of conferences, workshops, symposia and artistic performances every year, and it publishes books and monographs in many areas of knowledge.
In keeping with the legacy of its namesake, the Library seeks to produce and disseminate knowledge through all its activities, and reaches out to the public through a variety of training courses and academic seminars that promote knowledge and mutual dialogue and understanding among peoples and cultures.
In this spirit, the Library of Alexandria has partnered with edX to put its courses online through the edX platform to expand its outreach and become an active promoter of knowledge internationally. It will be launching a number of courses online starting early 2016.
