Curriculum

The University of Birmingham's MSc Urban Sustainability programme offers a comprehensive education in urban sustainability principles, theories, and practices, with an emphasis on ethical considerations, social equity, and environmental responsibility. The programme is informed by recent interdisciplinary research and focuses on the science and technology behind urban sustainability's challenges and solutions. 

As you progress through the programme, you will:

  • Develop technical skills to drive urban sustainability:

    Develop the expertise you need to address complex urban challenges through hands-on experience with data analysis, modelling, and research methods.

  • Learn about urban air quality analysis and pollution mitigation:

    Explore the science of air pollution and discover how to develop effective strategies for improving air quality in urban areas.

  • Establish data-driven solutions for climate-resilient cities:

    Learn how to analyse climate risks, model urban systems, and design resilient strategies to adapt to changing climates.

Admissions

To meet the entry requirements, applicants must have (or, if still completing their undergraduate studies expecting to achieve) a minimum of an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) UK undergraduate degree, a postgraduate diploma from a UK university, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. No standardised test scores or application fees are required to apply.

To be considered for admission into the online MSc Urban Sustainability, you will need to submit the following materials:

  • Online application (no fee)

  • Transcripts (uploaded, scanned copies are acceptable to demonstrate how you meet, or expect to meet, the entry requirements; your admissions advisor will reach out to you if you need to submit official transcripts)

  • Contact details for one referee who has knowledge of your professional or academic ability 

  • Evidence of your English language level no older than two years (if English is not your first language)

It is also recommended that you submit a 500-word personal statement that outlines why you are interested in applying for this programme.
