NYU Steinhardt’s rigorous online Master of Arts in School Counseling equips pre-K–12 counselors with best practices and techniques to champion equity, social justice, and diversity — and to pursue certification and employment in schools across the country.

About the program

Tuition and fees

Concentrations

Robust and rigorous, the programs at NYU Steinhardt benefit from experienced, active practitioners and top researchers. Two different concentrations exist for NYU Steinhardt’s Master of Arts in School Counseling:

  • Bilingual School Counseling Concentration: Specialize in bilingual school counseling by learning to develop and apply appropriate solutions to common challenges experienced by culturally and linguistically diverse pre-K–12 students. This program requires 3 additional credits focused on bilingual and multicultural theory.
  • Master of Arts in School Counseling with Advanced Certificate (dual degree): Complete an additional 12 credits for Professional Certification in the State of New York to continue practicing. The online Master of Arts in School Counseling program comprises 48 to 51 credits required for Initial Certification, and graduates may complete their Professional Certification at the degree-awarding school or at a different institution.

Admissions

NYU Steinhardt looks for candidates committed to equity and social justice. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and must have earned a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) during your undergraduate degree. No GRE scores required. To complete an application, you will need to submit:

  • Your statement of purpose

  • Current résumé or CV

  • All post-secondary transcripts

  • Two letters of recommendation

  • TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores (if applicable)

  • Non-refundable application fee of $75


Field placements and practicums for real-world experience

In addition to completing 48 graduate-level credits and activities in the counseling lab, learners will also engage in a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship at any NYU-approved school in or near their community. 

100-hour practicum 

Apply classroom theory to real-world settings under the guidance of a certified school counselor for eight to 10 hours per week (100 hours per term). Practice directly with clients for 40 hours of your 100 total hours. All practicums start in the spring terms and can begin as early as the second term.

600-hour internship

Complete 300 internship hours per term, three full days or 19 hours per week, under the supervision of a certified school counselor. Internships take place across two sites to comply with K-8 and 9-12 requirements and include 240 hours of direct practice. All internships start in the fall terms and can begin as early as the first term.
