ImperialX: Empathetic Engineer

At the conclusion of the course you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate theoretical and practical understanding of the different stages of the empathetic engineering approach in the context of engineering design projects.
2. Analyse the socio-cultural, environmental, and economic factors that need to be considered in the given context.
3. Apply the principles, methods and tools to an engineering design project to deliver more effective and measurable outcomes.
4. Optionally, you can apply the learning from the course to a project of your own choosing, and develop a project proposal that spans technological, socio-cultural, environmental and economic systems, including how the proposal creates and captures value for each of the relevant stakeholders.

1. Introduction to the Empathetic Engineering approach, its 6 phases and key principles.
2. Introduction to the problematics of project scoping, Scoping Statements and the application of these insights on a challenge identified by learners in their own project.
3. Introduction to the Understand phase and the identification and analysis of key stakeholders and the systems context in which the new solution might operate.
4. Introduction to the Focus phase and learning how to translate the key insights identified in the previous phase into a mission statement and a design brief.
5. Introduction to different techniques of ideation, the translation of creative ideas into an end-to-end new customer or user experience and the development of a new product, service or system proposition.
6. Introduction to prototyping and testing the proposed solution and its translation into a compelling value proposition with a solid business model.
7. Introduction to the problematics of designing a robust implementation plan which seamlessly aligns with the needs of the stakeholders and of the organisation.

1. How many attempts do I have with each ungraded practice quiz and the final graded quiz?

You have multiple attempts for each quiz, including the final graded quiz.

2. How do I pass the course?

In order to pass the course, you need to complete the final graded quiz. You need to get a minimum of 60% to pass the course and get a certificate.

3. Is it too late to join the course?

No, the course is self-paced. We estimate the course at ~40 hours of instructional time total. Please keep this in mind when planning your work.

4. What does "self-paced" mean?

"Self-paced" refers to one of the two primary course delivery formats offered through edX. Self-paced courses do not follow a set schedule. Instead, learners work through them at their own pace.

5. How long does the course take to complete?

We estimate the total instructional time for the eight-module course to be around forty hours, excluding the time optionally spent on design projects. This is based on an estimate of 5 hours per module.
