This course explains the structural components used to write a proposal, but particularly for grants that can bring in resources for a project or program. You will learn how to weave the different components together into a cohesive message efficiently delivered to a potential funder.
Proposal writing for grant funding is competitive, and a highly in-demand skill. From non-profit organizations to educational institutions or even community groups, grant writing and grant management is a vital component of fundraising efforts, and can be critical for continued success and operation. Having grant writing skills is essential for many jobs and positions, not just ones with the title of “Grant Writer.”
This self-paced, online course continues to introduce the fundamentals of grant writing. It is the second in a set of three grant writing courses that form the Grant Writing certificate program and focuses on the eight core structural components of grant proposals, from introducing yourself or your organization and its mission, explaining the problem or need your organization has identified as well as your objective and plan to address the identified issue, how you will evaluate your program and how the allocated funds will be used. The course focuses on how to frame your "ask" and create a compelling narrative through the proposal components while including necessary and relevant information to improve your chances of being awarded funds.
While this is not an instructor-led course, enrollment in the verified track will also give you access to feedback on individual projects from grant professionals who will provide guidance on a generic approach that is easily tailored to any funding opportunity.

Learning how best to ask others for support translates into job skills necessary for any business, significantly so in the non-profit sector, where programs depend on the generosity of others. Learning how to allow people to join you in your mission makes you a valuable team member of any enterprise. For some, it is the reason they have a job.

This badge of knowledge demonstrates fundamental understanding of how project planning leads to securing resources. Whether you are involved in asking many people for a little bit of money or writing proposals that bring in significant amounts to complete projects, the certificate signals your ability to get the job done.
Grant writers research, draft and submit proposals to help secure grant funding. Many work for nonprofit or charitable organizations. Some are self-employed and take on tasks such as researching prospective funders to determine which funding opportunities align in mission and purpose. They explain why the shared concern is important and how funds will be used. All involved with the project through the grant writer will coordinate responses to funder’s questions, document the impacts upon completion of activities and develop strong, positive relationships with funders.
What are significant data points in the grantmaking industry?
Proposal writing skills are crucial for new or potential grant writers because they enable them to effectively communicate their project ideas, secure funding, and create a compelling case for support. Here are some reasons why project planning and proposal writing is essential:
Grants are a significant source of funding for nonprofits, research projects and community initiatives. A well-written proposal increases the chances of receiving grants. Donors and foundations review proposals to determine alignment with their priorities in creating change.
Proposal writing involves clear communication of project goals, activities and expected outcomes.
Well-structured proposals will help guarantee that reviewers understand the significance of the issue and how you will address specific needs.
The grant landscape is competitive. A compelling proposal stands out. Effective proposals provide an edge. A thoroughly planned proposal defines components, timelines and budgets efficiently. This clarity benefits overall project management. It is so much more than just “free money.” It shows the funder just how they will be partnered with others for success. It lays the foundation for future requests in the next phase or new project.
Grant writers contribute to causes they believe in. Grants awarded can be added to a resume to enhance career advancement opportunities. Becoming part of a grant writing team can be a rewarding career choice, regardless of the level of involvement, even when you are a team of one.
