About me

Toru Takeuchi is a full professor at department of architecture and building engineering, school of environment and society in Tokyo Institute of Technology. Graduated from Tokyo Tech in 1984, he has 20 years of experience as a professional structural engineer working for Nippon Steel Corporation and Ove Arup & Partners, London. After joining to Tokyo Tech in 2003, he has been in charge of designing building structures in the campus, for example, Midorigaoka-1st building retrofit, Institute library, Environmental Energy Innovation (EEI) building, Midorigaoka-6th building, Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) building, Suzukake-hall, Suzukake J2 and J3 building, Element-strategy center building, and so on. Prof. Takeuchi’s research area is structural design, steel structure, and seismic design including seismic isolation and response control. His laboratory is engaged in diverse research activities meant to produce “tough and elegant” architectural structures, applying the fruits of their research works into practical structural design. The reviewed journal research papers published from his laboratory reach over 180.

He is a member of Architectural Institute of japan (AIJ) (in charge of vice president from 2018-2020), International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) (Executive Council and chair of WG8), IABSE, JSCA, JSSC, JSSI and so on. He is awarded AIJ thesis award (2011), IASS Tuboi award (2005), JSDC Japan structural design award (2005), Good Design award (2005, 2011, 2012) and so on. Published books include “Buckling-Restrained Braces and Applications” (JSSI, 2017), “Design of seismic isolation and response-controlled structures” (AIJ Kanto, 2007), “Mechanics, Material, Structural Design (2012)”, “Guide to Earthquake Response evaluation of metal spatial structures (IASS, 2019)”, and so on.
