Associate Professor at Faculty of Sport Sciences, Waseda University
Dr Michael Annear is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Waseda University. His research and teaching interests span the disciplines of physical activity epidemiology, environmental gerontology, and healthy urban design. Dr Annear has published and presented his work widely in academic and Japanese fora. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and government reports on active and healthy aging across the Asia-Pacific and Japan. Born and educated in New Zealand, Dr Annear graduated with a PhD from the Christchurch School of Medicine at the University of Otago, in 2012. He has worked on both academic and government projects related to population health, aging, and the urban environment. Dr Annear moved to Japan in 2017 and enjoys an active life of running and cycling around the streets, cycleways, and open spaces of urban Tokyo. Dr Annear is also an Associate Editor with the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and is active in international communities of practice related to the promotion of physical activity and health across the life course.
