Associate professor at TU Delft

About me

Laurens de Vries is associate professor at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at Delft University of Technology. He works in the field of energy market design, analyzing the interrelations between the physical infrastructure, its (economic) organization and regulation. Recent research projects involve the design of European balancing markets, the design of direct-current microgrids and congestion in distribution networks. A second line of research is on how regulation, such as the European CO2 market, renewable energy policy and capacity mechanisms, affect investment in electricity generation. He likes to use agent-based models to simulate the impacts of policy instruments on the energy transition.

Laurens has a MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Delft University of Technology, a M.A. in Environmental Studies from The Evergreen State College and a PhD Degree from the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of Delft University of Technology. He is the Coordinator of the European Energy Research Alliance Joint Programme on Energy Systems Integration.
