Dr. Shin and her research team’s mastectomy bra and prosthesis invention won a gold medal and a special merit award in Seoul International Invention Fair 2015. Her ‘Cross Your Heart’ collection won two World Fashion Awards, fashion Chic & fashion Fine, at the Prime Source Forum Hong Kong in 2016. Her 2018 fashion exhibition “Made in Hong Kong’ has been praised for its creativity and in-depth historical and cultural design research approach. Dr. Shin has showcased her design at the international venues including China, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Israel, Korea, Russia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA.

About me

Dr Kristina Shin has been managing two PolyU Fashion Design and Creation MOOCs since July 2020 when the course project team left PolyU.

Dr Kristina Shin is the author of a textbook entitled ‘Pattern making for Underwear design (2nd edition)’, which is a comprehensive pattern making guide aimed at students, educators, and industry. This publication presents her innovative bra cup manipulation method entitled ‘Shin’s method’ which she developed using a flat pattern making concept. She graduated from Chung Nam National University, Korea with a BA in Clothing and Textiles, then she received an MA in fashion merchandising from California State University Los Angeles, and a PhD in fashion design from the University of Northumbria, UK. She has over 10 years’ experience in both the outerwear and underwear industries as a fashion designer and patternmaker. Kristina Shin‘s research interests include design for quality of life (i.e., mastectomy bra and prosthesis design & hydrotherapy device design) and 2) design for visual identity. Her major works include ‘thermal comfort mastectomy bra and prosthesis invention ( 2015)’, an intimate fashion exhibition ‘Cross Your Heart (2016)’, a fashion exhibiton ‘Made in Hong Kong (2018)’.
