About me

Lodewijk Stuyt (1953) obtained both his MSc and his PhD in hydrology related topics (land drainage, water table management) from Wageningen University & Research in The Netherlands. After obtaining his PhD he did consultancy work in Pakistan, Egypt, the US and Europe, and has been a consultant for FAO in Rome.

Until recently, Dr. Stuyt was a Senior Research Associate at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), where he co-coordinated transdisciplinary research projects dealing with land drainage, water- and land use planning, and the possible impact of climate change on various sorts of land use, with a focus on managing water shortages and salinization in irrigated agriculture.

For many years, he has been a teacher in postdoc courses of Wageningen University & Research. Mid 2019, dr Stuyt has retired from WUR, but continues his advisory work as an independent consultant on land drainage technology. His major fields of interest are land drainage technology, water scarcity, saline water in coastal regions and the transfer of water-related challenges to opportunities for policy makers.

Dr Stuyt regularly presents results of his research in Europe, the USA and the Far East. In 1992, he developed design criteria for fibrous drain envelopes; these are widely and successfully applied in Europe and beyond.
