Derek Justin Brown

Derek Brown joined UAE University in 2013. He has been an instructor, committee member, and coordinator, both in the University College Foundations Program (UFP) and in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course.

Some of his previous work includes: at Arkansas State University, establishing the first writing center and creating a freshman introduction to university course, both serving international students, and giving tutorials on how to utilize BlackBoard; in Sharjah at Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies, designing the professional English course for a newly created BSc program while ensuring with colleagues the continuity of objectives, outcomes, and matrices throughout all courses of the program.

At UAEU, he has been involved in a variety of projects including implementing a new Introduction to Academic English (IAE) course specifically for education students, authoring and editing program-wide assessments, and as curriculum coordinator, adding components to adapt UFP courses to standardized testing changes. He has also independently created and taught German courses for the CEC, presented at TESOL Arabia on facilitating engagement in writing classes, created websites for four courses, and served as an adjudicator for the debate club at UAEU.
