Professor of Neurobiology at University of California, Berkeley
I have taught biology, psychology, and cognitive science at the University of California, Berkeley, for more than 30 years. For a decade, I worked in the clinical treatment of addiction and of post-traumatic-stress disorder at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in San Francisco. And throughout the last 20 years, I have been teaching neuroscience and conversing about science with Tibetan Buddhist monastics in India, Bhutan, and Nepal. I have a doctorate in molecular biology from Caltech, and another in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon; and am author of Foundational Concepts in Neuroscience: A Brain-Mind Odyssey (Norton, 2016) and of Mind Beyond Brain (Columbia, 2018).
